NEW ORLEANS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The Humane Society of North Texas will bring nearly 400 of 700 feral horses to Texas that the Army is removing from a western Louisiana Army base.

The Army also uses the land in the national forest for training.

Horse lovers have sued the Army over its plans.

The lawsuit calls the horses a significant historical and cultural part of Fort Polk and says the Army's plan will send many to slaughter. It contends that the Army omitted steps required to create its plan to put groups of horses up for adoption by nonprofits.

The Army says the horses are a safety risk in training areas.

The Tulane Environmental Law Clinic sued Wednesday in federal court in Baton Rouge for Pegasus Equine Guardian Association, created to protect the horses.
