Thousands turned out for a multi-faith prayer vigil to mourn the nine people killed in South Carolina’s church massacre. As the state and residents struggle to cope in the aftermath, accused killer Dylann Roof was arraigned on several charges, including nine counts of murder. U.S. sees over 3.1 million COVID-19 cases

The U.S. has recorded more than 3.1 million confirmed coronavirus cases, with numbers surging to new highs in some states that have rolled back lockdown restrictions. In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster signed an executive order prohibiting the sale of alcohol after 11 p.m. In Tennessee's Shelby County, restaurants require customers to leave their contact information before being seated, so owners are able to contact them if someone there tests positive for the virus. Michael George reports from New York, which has just sent hard-hit Florida enough Remdesivir to treat 280 patients.

Tagging migrating whimbrel shorebirds

Whimbrel are dramatically declining in numbers due to the pressures of climate change encroaching upon the birds' habitats and migratory routes. So, it was a shock when ornithologists discovered that 20,000 eastern whimbrel – half of the estimated population – stopped to roost on South Carolina's tiny Deveaux Bank during their annual migration. Correspondent Martha Teichner joins experts as they attempt to capture and tag some of these birds, to learn more about them in order to best help them survive.
