Zambia has not yet received any vaccines

While more than 60 million vaccine doses have been administered in the U.S., the country of Zambia has not yet received any vaccines. According to international vaccine equity initiative COVAX, unchecked infection anywhere in the world may give rise to further mutations that threaten health globally. Biden ramps up COVID vaccine production

To help ramp up vaccination efforts, the pharmaceutical company Merck has agreed to help mass-produce Johnson and Johnson's single-dose coronavirus vaccine. President Biden now says there will be enough doses for every adult in the country by the end of May. 50 million COVID shots administered since Biden inauguration

The Biden administration is marking a new milestone in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. has administered 50 million of its promised 100 million vaccine doses in just five weeks. This comes as homegrown variants cause alarm on both coasts on the country. Dr. Richard Besser, the president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the former acting director of the CDC, joins CBSN to discuss the latest.

Top Pfizer scientist on COVID-19 vaccine

Pfizer announced it will supply 200 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine for the U.S. by the end of May and is aiming to ship 2 billion doses globally this year. The vaccine is over 90% effective according to clinical trials conducted in 2020, but more testing needs to be done to see how well it protects against the new variants. Dr. Phil Dormitzer, who helped develop the vaccine as vice president and chief scientific officer of viral vaccines at Pfizer, joins CBSN to discuss.
