Will Khalil Mack's First NFL Sack Come Against Seattle?
Watch CBS News
Back in the calendar year of 1984, a whopping 30 years ago now, the then-Los Angeles Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks played two memorable AFC playoff games. The first in January 1984 saw the Raiders beat the Seahawks, and the second in December 1984 saw the tables turned as Seattle knocked out the defending Super Bowl champions.
The 0-7 Oakland Raiders travel to Seattle this weekend to take on the defending Super Bowl champions. And while the 4-3 Seahawks have already lost as many games as they did all of last year, they still are an opponent never to be taken lightly on their home field. Of course, the winless Silver & Black can't take any team lightly these days as they look to snap a 13-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Trailing by just three points in the fourth quarter, the Oakland Raiders fumbled twice and saw their chance to win the game against the Cleveland Browns on the road disappear quickly. With the 23-13 loss, the Silver & Black drop to 0-7 on the 2014 season—and it may be awhile before they have a decent chance to win another game.
The last thing the 2014 Oakland Raiders need is more injuries to their defense, but that's what they get this week as they prepare to play the Cleveland Browns Sunday on the road. If the Silver & Black can't stop anyone's offense, they'll never win a game this year.
In the modern NFL, only four teams have gone through a winless season: the 1960 Dallas Cowboys, the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 1982 Baltimore Colts and the 2008 Detroit Lions. If the Raiders can't win this weekend in Cleveland, they could be looking at an 0-11 start—and that's when the pressure will start to mount. Avoiding membership in this exclusive club will be paramount for the Silver & Black.
The Oakland Raiders are 0-6, and they're running out of winnable games on the schedule. Now, the Silver & Black travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns next Sunday, and maybe it's a chance for the Raiders to win. The Browns are 3-3, but they just lost to previously-winless Jacksonville. Can Oakland take advantage?
Overall, the Oakland Raiders played a solid game against one of the best teams in the NFL for the second week in a row. But the Silver & Black still don't have a win in 2014, and that falls on the defense again. The offense is showing life; the defense just is painful to watch every time out.
So much for staying healthy after the bye week. The Oakland Raiders' official injury list almost doubled this week from last, as eight players are nursing sore body parts. How that will impact Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals at the Coliseum is still not clear.
In Week Six, the Oakland Raiders' offense set season-high marks in total yards, passing yards and rushing yards. If this is Interim Head Coach Tony Sparano's plan for staying competitive with a bad defense, it's not necessarily a bad plan. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr had his best game of the year against San Diego, and the sky is the limit for the youngster going forward this 2014 season.
