Mark Teixeira is confident that the New York Yankees can overcome key injuries likely to impact the team through the first month of the regular season.
"Let me say what I've been saying: $189 (million) is the goal," Steinbrenner said. ..."That is the goal, but in no way, shape or form will we sacrifice our commitment to field a championship-caliber team. That's not going to happen."
What a day in the life of the Yankees. Imagine what happens when the games begin to count.
Mark Teixeira is going to be out until at least early May with a strained right wrist tendon, the latest major injury setback for the New York Yankees.
Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes says he is scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday for the first time since being sidelined by a bulging disk in his upper back three weeks ago.
The media references to Teixeira's injury noted the involved area to be his wrist -– a joint, while also pointing to a diagnosis of strain. This doesn't totally compute.
Sure, the Yankees are banged-up. But the Mets have the Johan Santana mess -- plus an outfield by committee, and not a particularly great committee at that.
"I'm obviously worried about it, because wrists are very unpredictable," Cashman said. "Even if you can get a positive diagnosis back — which, of course, I'm going to hope for — that still doesn't mean we're out of the woods."
Teixeira underwent an MRI which revealed the strain. He was to head back to New York with team doctors to have the wrist looked at by a hand specialist on Wednesday, WFAN's Sweeny Murti reported.
Robinson Cano's father says he expects the New York Yankees to re-sign their All-Star second baseman rather than let him leave through free agency after the season.
A home run obviously generates runs as quickly as possible from a given at-bat, but might it be the case that teams that strive for too many home runs actually hurt their overall run production?
The hot injury of the young spring training season appears to be ulnar fractures. First it was Curtis Granderson, who throws right-handed but bats left. He was hit on the right forearm on February 24 by the first pitch he faced in a spring training game.
Despite his injury, Cashman appeared to be in good spirits. On his way to the hospital, he texted to WFAN's Sweeny Murti: "It was awesome."
"I'm loving being back," the 40-year-old said. "I'm excited about the season and this organization and trying to help us win another championship. If I stay healthy, I feel like I can pitch for a long time. It doesn't mean I want to, but I feel like I could."
Girardi feels as if making the outfield switch might be asking too much, and wants to give Granderson a better comfort level when he returns.

Hiroki Kuroda allowed four runs — one earned — and three hits over 1 2/3 innings in his initial exhibition-game start for the Yankees. The Yankees had four errors and gave up six unearned runs. New York has 13 errors in eight games.
Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano says his contract status is on his mind, though not a distraction. Cano is due $15 million in the final season of what became a $57 million, six-year deal and is eligible for free agency after the World Series.
Whether as a starter or a reliever, David Phelps will likely be an integral part of the Yankees.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman admitted on WFAN radio Thursday that a "significant" contract extension was offered to Cano. Apparently it wasn't significant enough.

Jeter discussed how he's feeling coming off surgery, CC talked about how he's preparing for Opening Day and Pettitte compared his ability as a pitcher now to when he was younger. Mark Teixeira and Brian Cashman also stopped by to chat.
"We're not commenting any further than acknowledging that we made a significant offer and had some dialogue with his agent, Scott Boras," Cashman said. "But other than that, there's not much really to say."
