Officer shoots man at Penn Station during attempted robbery, NYPD says
An off-duty New York City police officer shot and wounded a man during an attempted robbery inside Penn Station on Wednesday evening, police say.
It happened on a Long Island Rail Road platform at around 7 p.m.
Two off-duty NYPD officers, who are in a relationship, had just left work and were heading home on the LIRR, police sources tell CBS News New York. The officers were not in uniform at the time.
When they were on board the train, sources say a man tried to rob the male officer, and a physical struggle ensued and spilled out onto the platform. Police say the female officer then pulled out her gun and shot the suspect.
The suspect, 32, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to his arm and stomach, and is expected to survive. He has not yet been charged, and remains in police custody at the hospital.
Both officers were also taken to a local hospital; the male officer suffered a cut to his ear, and the female officer was taken for observation.
Sources say suspect has five prior arrests, most recently for an assault in Brooklyn in August. It's unclear if he was armed during Wednesday's incident.
At least one LIRR train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma was canceled due to police activity. Regular service has since resumed.
