Sheriff: 1 Horse Saved, 2 Die After Falling Through Ice On Wisconsin Pond

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities say one horse was rescued but two others died after breaking through the ice on a private pond in western Wisconsin.

The Dunn County Communications Center received a call at about 9:35 a.m. Sunday that three horses had broken through the ice on a private pond near the intersection of 830th Street and 640th Ave. in Elk Mound Township, which is near Menonomie, Wis.

Authorities say the horses had gotten out of the area where they were contained and traveled onto a neighboring property. They walked onto a frozen pond and then broke through the ice.

Firefighters from Elk Mound and Menomonie, along with neighbors in the vicinity, worked to get the horses out of the pond. Authorities say one horse was rescued out of the water alive, but the two others died due to drowning in cold, deep water.
