Woman charged with attempted murder after I-95 road rage shooting in Boca Raton, Broward deputies say
A 26-year-old Delray Beach woman is facing attempted murder and other charges after a road rage shooting on Interstate 95 in Boca Raton that left a man seriously injured, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on I-95 north, near Palmetto Park Road and Hillsboro, BSO said. At the time, the Florida Highway Patrol requested assistance from the Boca Raton Police Department and Broward deputies.
Victim hospitalized with serious injuries
Investigators said a suspect was detained in connection with the incident, and a man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Breanna Evans, faces two counts of attempted murder, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, and one count of shooting from a vehicle.
According to investigators, Evans and the victim don't know each other, and the case appears to be related to road rage.
Sheriff's office issues public warning
The story is prompting a warning from the Broward Sheriff's Office, as the victim remains hospitalized after his attorney said he was shot in the head.
"We are talking about someone who was shot in the middle of the highway, especially at a time when people were returning home from work," BSO spokeswoman Claudinne Caro said. "This could have been so much worse. Fortunately, the victim is recuperating."
"It is very important to remain calm," Caro said. "If you see a driver who is tailgating you, let them go by. If you see a driver who is being rude or giving you obscene gestures, just ignore them and do not engage, and always stay calm while you are driving. If you are a victim, call 911."
Incident occurred near county line
Caro said it is not known what prompted the incident, and said the suspect, Evans, did not know the victim.
She said the incident happened just south of the Palm Beach County line in the northbound lanes of I-95 around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and ended near the Palmetto Park Road exit in Boca Raton. The victim was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
Evans is charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, and one count of shooting from a vehicle.
Defense claims fear and self-defense
There was a spirited discussion in bond court when Evans made an appearance on Thursday afternoon.
Her defense attorney said she acted in self-defense.
"She was in fear," he said. "She was in fear for her life, which resulted in her defending herself. She was being followed by two male individuals. She is a single female, and she thought she was in danger. The roads of Broward County are a dangerous place for females driving. This is a person with no prior record."
Prosecutor disputes self-defense claim
The prosecutor argued that Evans acted deliberately, not out of fear, citing her own statements to investigators. He said Evans removed the gun from the passenger seat, disengaged the safety, and shot the victim in the head — actions that, in his view, contradict her claim of self-defense.
"By her own admission, she cut him because she doesn't like people driving in the fast lane," the prosecutor said.
He said, "There was nothing to indicate this person was trying to drive into her. It was her reckless driving that caused this to occur."
Judge denies bond, restricts contact
A judge found probable cause for the charges and ordered that Evans be held without bond and have no contact with the victim. She was also told she could not possess any firearms.
