Man killed after shoplifting incident ends with shooting involving deputy at Walmart near Cutler Bay, sheriff's office says
A man is dead after a shoplifting incident at a Walmart near Cutler Bay ended in a shooting involving a Miami-Dade deputy on Thursday morning, the sheriff's office said.
Around 7:15 a.m., a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputy was patrolling a supermarket near US-1 and Southwest 211 Street. While on patrol, a loss prevention officer notified MDSO of an individual who was "actively stealing," said Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.
The deputy then attempted to make contact with that individual, but he fled, leading the officer on a pursuit. The chase then resulted in a physical altercation just outside of a Walmart located at 21151 S. Dixie Hwy.
CBS News Miami spoke with Anna, who had just arrived at work when the incident happened.
"What I saw was some guy in a white T-shirt, running outside the Walmart parking lot," she said.
Cordero-Stutz said that during the altercation, the shoplifting suspect showed that he was armed and the deputy discharged his service weapon. The suspect then ran away before he collapsed on the street just outside the Walmart.
Anna told CBS News Miami that she saw the confrontation between the suspect and the deputy.
"Well, I heard three shots and all I saw was a police officer with a gun," she said. "That's the first time I heard gunshots and my body shook."
Deputies began to render aid until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and took the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he died, Cordero-Stutz said. Neither the deputy nor any bystanders were injured during the incident.
"We're grateful at this time due to the circumstances that could have gone so much worse that he was not injured and no one else — no innocent bystanders — were injured," Cordero-Stutz said.
According to Cordero-Stutz, the 37-year-old deputy is a five-year veteran of the sheriff's office. She added that he was not assigned to the area, but it was a part of his normal patrol of the neighborhood, and he went into a local business to check in on them.
Cordero-Stutz did not say whether the deputy would be placed on any leave during the investigation.
For the suspect, Cordero-Stutz said he had an "extensive criminal past" and was "actively involved in a crime," and reiterated that he was armed, but it is unclear whether the man used or attempted to use his weapon during the altercation.
She then advised everyone that if they see any active criminal activity or anything suspicious, they should immediately report it.
"If you see a crime being committed, then notify the appropriate persons," Cordero-Stutz said. "If it is an employee of the business, or in this case, a loss prevention officer, whose job is to protect the business, so that our citizens can come and do their shopping and feel safe."
As per standard procedures, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
