The Amtrak switch problems have led to extensive delays for Metra commuters.
Construction is set to begin Friday at the 103rd and Washington heights Metra station on the Rock Island line. The station will be expanded and undergo a complete rehab, adding features to make the station more accessible for passengers with disabilities.
The outage was reported near 11th Street, just north of the Museum Campus in the South Loop.
Trains were halted in the area in both directions, and all trains on the BNSF Line were expected to experience extensive delays.
