Initial reports indicated that the child got a hold of the gun and suffered a self-inflicted wound, but police have not confirmed that information.
Details are developing on the incident in Merrillville.
The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The shooter remained at large late Monday afternoon. Kris Habermehl reports from Chopper 2.

The child's mother told police her son was accidentally shot by her 3-year-old son after he found the gun in her purse when she left a bedroom.
The man was arrested and charged on the spot after being ordered to drop the gun.
The man said he was there for "more bullets," police said.
