3 teens charged in deadly Chicago Loop stabbing appear in court; oldest to stay in jail

Three teens were charged in connection with a deadly stabbing that took place in Chicago's Loop on Sunday.

Chicago police said two boys, 14 and 16 years old, were charged with first-degree murder. The 16-year-old boy was charged with mob action. Another 14-year-old boy was charged with armed robbery.

The three teens appeared in court on Tuesday, where a judge ordered the oldest teen to stay in jail.

The judge said 16-year-old Wuinayker Rodriguez-Vasquez would pose a real and present threat to the community because of the randomness of this crime.

The teen blew a kiss to his mom and friends in the front row as he entered the courtroom, at one point using his orange shirt to cover his face before turning to the judge. He and others are now charged with a crime that multiple people called senseless in court.

Prosecutors listed some of the items left behind when a 49-year-old man, who has yet to be identified, was stabbed in the back and left for dead on South Wabash early Sunday morning.

Those items included a cat in a crate and a cart of his possessions. But one thing they did not find is a so-called "skeleton mask" because prosecutors said the three teens took it in a suspected robbery that turned deadly.

The Assistant State's Attorney Todd Kleist told the judge, "This is the definition of a random violent killing of a man who is doing nothing other than minding his own business, trying to survive on these streets."

Prosecutors said 16-year-old Wuinayker Rodriguez-Vasquez and two 14-year-olds approached the setup to steal a mask. One juvenile armed with and using a metal rod to hit the victim. Wuinaker kicks him and stabs him once in the back with a knife.

Those three teens and others were picked up about 12 hours later, near 21st and Western, after they were spotted on camera and tracked down by police.

Investigators said Wuinayker still had on similar clothes and a knife in his right sleeve, though they could not say if it was the same knife.

One 14-year-old faces first-degree murder for alleged actions with a metal pipe. The second 14-year-old was charged with felony armed robbery.

Wuinayker's public defender asked the judge for electronic monitoring, pointing to his young age, the fact that he has a newborn child he wants to support, and added that another teen told police she brought the knife that day.

The judge denied the electronic monitoring request and told Wuinayker that one day he may be able to help his family or breathe fresh air, but that is not an opportunity the victim will ever get.

Prosecutors say Wuinayker does not have any other arrests, but did have some sort of note in his file about entry from Texas in 2023.

Police records showed he was born in Venezuela. His attorney said he's lived in Cook County for the past two years and has a work permit.

Police said on Monday that six people were taken into custody in the attack, but only three have been charged.
