In 1845, the U.S. needed a professional naval force to protect its interests. With no money from Congress, Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft transformed Fort Severn in Annapolis, Maryland, into the U.S. Naval Academy. The institution began with 50 midshipmen that year. But since then, the Naval Academy has trained thousands.
